The village itself was voted the most beautiful in Austria – and it’s easy to see why. Set on the tree-covered sides of the Alpbachtal valley, timber buildings cluster around the tall spire of the local church. The streets are dotted with traditional guesthouses and small family-run hotels, where the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Evenings are quiet here, so settle in for leisurely dinners and cosy nightcaps by the fire. But if you do fancy a little more action, there is a handful of pubs where you can grab a glühwein and play Austrian bar games.

Eager for some alternative winter fun? Snuggle up under a blanket and admire the scenery on a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Or for some family-friendly thrills, ride the twists and turns of the 1.4km alpine coaster.

The dining room has superb panoramic views of the mountains and you can head back there in the evening to simply relax before bed.
