    The City

Situated at the site of an old Roman fort, and having been the location of one of the Northumbrian kings’ palaces, Doncaster is one of the oldest cities in Britain. When in Doncaster, history is all around you, with an architecture spanning an extremely diverse time period. The town is also famous for its railway heritage, as Doncaster played a key role in the early days of steam travel. The very first locomotive works was built by the Great Northern Railway in the heart of the town centre in 1853.

The city saw its real heyday in the 18th century, when its most famous attraction, the race course, was established. Horse racing has been taking place in Doncaster since 1703, and its St Leger Race began in 1778, which makes it even older than the famous Epsom Derby!
