    The City

Wisconsin Dells is situated in four different counties Adams, Columbia, Juneau, and Sauk in South-Central Wisconsin. It takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a glacially formed gorge that has striking sandstone formations that are still part of boat tours in the area. It was in 1856 that Wisconsin Dells, then known as Kilbourn City in honor of the local railroad’s president, was incorporated. In 1931 the town’s name was changed to Wisconsin Dells. The original industry was logging which gave way to tourism when the first bridge was built in 1850 and about the same time the railroad began providing service to Wisconsin Dells. The rest as they say is history.
